I am making available for download a sample sentence flow of Matthew 14:13–21 discussed last Saturday. The download is a zip file of my scanned notebook in three PDF files. To make use of it, you will have to have an archive utility like ZipGenius (http://www.zipgenius.it ) and a PDF Reader, like Sumatra PDF (http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/).
A sentence flow as used in our seminars is basically a copy of the biblical text done in such a way as to highlight the parts of a sentence. It is a “flow” as in flowchart, and therefore can serve as a “text-diagram” of a biblical selection. The snapshot above of Matthew 14:19 shows the usefulness of such a diagram. After underlining certain verbs red and marking the verbal objects in yellow, one can immediately notice the following
- the verbs take, blessed, broke and gave in that sequence remind one of Matthew 26:26 and the Eucharistic consecration
- Matthew no longer mentions the two fish in the breaking (he focuses on the loaves because of the allussion he makes to Matthew 26:26, the last supper)
In other words, the sentence flow helps one make a close reading of the bible selection. Go to the download page by clicking on the icon below.
