Two Sundays from now, we will be celebrating the Solemnity of the Ascension of Christ and this Sunday’s theme already anticipates that event. John, for whom the Death, Resurrection and Ascension/Glorification of Christ is summed up in the phrase “the lifting up of the Son of Man” gives us the last words of Christ during the Last Supper.

The story of two disciples walking to Emmaus is a story of conversion. Jerusalem, in the gospel of Luke, is the place of salvation. That is why when the two disciples walk away from Jerusalem they were walking away from salvation. In returning to Jerusalem they also go back to salvation by listening to the proclamation of Peter. What made this change this possible? The Risen Lord who opened their eyes, first through the reading of the Scriptures and second, through the breaking of the bread.

The seven readings from the Old Testament selected for the Easter Vigil are discussed at length at the Mystical Geek. The Gospel reading for that celebration is about the discovery of the empty tomb and the angel’s proclamation of the resurrection of Christ. The second reading, selected from Romans, is about baptism itself. The mystery of the Total Christ is somehow delineated in both these readings. The resurrection of Christ also anticipates the resurrection of those who will be incorporated to Him.
